Country music and the rodeo world lost a legend 21 years ago today

Story by Karen Cotton

We lost Chris LeDoux 21 years ago today. LeDoux went from being a bareback rodeo legend, who often competed in the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo, to gracing the stage at CFD as a country act multiple times. Often known as Wyoming’s son, LeDoux, was also a Grammy nominee and bronze sculptor. The world lost him when he passed away in 2005, on March 9th in Casper, Wyoming, after fighting a hard brave battle with a rare cancer, Cholangiocarcinoma, which is a rare, aggressive cancer of the bile ducts, according to Wikepedia.

Below is an official photo of LeDoux from his official Facebook page

I was fortunate enough to interview Chris and you can hear that phone interview at the PRCA Hall of Fame, which had an exhibit of LeDoux on display. Or in Laramie, Wyoming at the University of Wyoming American Heritage Center in the Karen Cotton papers.

The PRCA Rodeo Hall of Fame museum will be moving to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where our magazine is based, by 2029.

Here is a link to that story by 9News in Denver, Colorado:

Ned LeDoux, one of Chris’ sons, carries on his father’s music legacy. He performs many of his father’s hits as well as his own hit songs. He often comes to Cheyenne and has also performed at CFD multiple times.

The Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum also has a number of Chris’ ticket stubs from his shows at CFD and press photos from my days as a reporter at the Wyoming Tribune Eagle. I believe they also had a signed guitar that Chris signed backstage, which is something artists often do when they perform at CFD. The guitar was on display at one point. I believe he was also inducted into the CFD Old West Museum’s Hall of Fame and will confirm that soon.

Sad news regarding the band Boston

According to Boston’s official Facebook page

This is what the band posted today,

“To All Tommy Decarlo and BOSTON fans and friends:

This morning Tommy lost his fight with cancer.  Everyone who has heard Tommy sing on stage, or on BOSTON albums, knows what a gifted artist he was, but few know how hard he worked to fill that role of BOSTON’s lead vocalist, and to turn himself into a top tier live performer –  or more important, what a dedicated father he was to his children.  Tommy was a competitive athlete, and yet a gentle soul who is remembered by by his son and many others as a sweet man who did not deserve to be cut down at such a young age.  It’s not surprising that one of his favorite BOSTON songs to sing was “To Be a Man.”

While many people will remember Tommy giving his audience amazing live performances, I will remember him as the incredible singer who appeared out of nowhere to rescue BOSTON in 2007, and gave all of us with the band 10 additional years of performing our most memorable live shows.  Rest in peace Tommy, you did know what it took to be a man,” said

Tom Scholz, for BOSTON.”

TobyMac, Jeremy Camp and Crowder put on an amazing show in Loveland tonight that hit deep and renewed fans’ faith in God

When the world truly is in a world of hurt right now with new wars, natural disasters, out of control Ai, social media, and on, and on there is one thing that is steady and that’s God.

Tonight three power house Christian musicians — TobyMac, Jeremy Camp and Crowder filled a sold out stadium at the Blue Arena in Loveland, Colorado and had every concert goer on their feet praising God through their songs.

Just the fact that the snowy and icy roads cleared and everyone safely made it from town to town is a miracle.

TobyMac’s Hits Deep tour really helped renew people’s faith in God.

Jeremy Camp opened the night with his hits “Survivors” and “Dead Man Walking” and many more.

The crowd knew every word to his songs and they joyously danced along. After Jeremy finished, a Disc Jockey from TobyMac’s band got the crowd going and on their feet in between stage changes.

The DJ spun contemporary hits from the 1980s and 1990s from the Back Street Boys, Vanilla Ice, and more. Different sections of the crowd took his challenge to see who could sing louder than the other.

Crowder came out next and performed his hit song, “Grave Robber,” and a brand new song, “It Really is Amazing Grace” based on the old church hymn, “Amazing Grace.” He also played many of his other hit songs. Last year Crowder performed at the Cheyenne Civic Center, too.

TobyMac took the stage after an intermission where the non-profit organization, Food For the Hungry, was presented about that he supports. And people had an opportunity to sponsor a child in an impoverished country. And provide them with food, clean water and an education.

Next it was TobyMac’s turn to energize the stage. He performed some of his biggest hits from “Heaven on My Mind,” which he wrote after his son passed away, to “Move (Keep Walking),” “Cornerstone,” “Faithfully,” and he even played a five minute mix of some of his older hits that he said his wife challenged him to do.

His band, DiverseCity, are all incredibly talented. There is a young gal in his band who has powerhouse vocals that rivals the late Whitney Houston. She needs a tour all of her own! That girl can sing!

If you weren’t able to make it to Loveland, TobyMac said his Colorado Springs, Colorado’s show has a few seats left so check him out there today March 8, 2026 at 6:30 p.m.
