The music world gained another angel

A beloved local musician Michael DeGreve, passed away on Monday, May 11 from a difficult battle with cancer according to a post on his official Facebook page. Many musicians and fans have paid tribute to him also.

This is what the post says:

“On behalf of Michael DeGreve’s life partner, Kris Reitinger, I’m writing to let you all know that Michael passed away Monday, May 11th around 8 p.m. at his and Kris’s home in Grants Pass, Oregon after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer.

Michael is best known for his 30 years nightly performing at Cheyenne, Wyoming’s Hitching Post Inn starting in 1977 – as the self-described “Hippie from Hollywood Hills, California.” He quickly won the hearts of cowboys, cowgirls, ranchers, farmers, government officials and white-and blue-collar workers. In recent years, Michael and Kris performed in the mountains just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada which he lovingly called “Wyoming West”.

Most of all, Michael will be remembered as everyone’s friend – no matter their walk in life – and the person who always uplifted, stood by and dedicated his life to helping others – often appearing before city, county and state officials to lobby them on behalf of human, environmental and wildlife causes – including bringing Neil Young to Cheyenne to perform and raise money for Cheyenne’s residents after the August 1, 1985 catastrophic flood.

Michael always held a guitar in one hand and his heart in the other on behalf of everyone he met along life’s way.

While tributes to Michael’s life and legacy will follow, for now, we want to let all of you, Michael’s Friends, know that he’s singing in Heaven today and weren’t we all blessed he greatly graced our lives in so many ways over the years. . .”

Another musician, Brian Leneschmidt, also posted about his dear friend on Facebook.

Leneschmidt said, “Lost a great friend, musician and spiritual brother. 35+ years of a wonderful connection that inspired me in so many ways. In the last few years we talked almost weekly, even though we ended up on opposite sides of the country.
I will write more about Michael DeGreve in the coming days, but I’ll need some time.
I love you so much brother, may your journey be that of peace, just as your time on earth was. Thank you for who you are.”

Solving the murder of the most hated man in Absaroka County, Wyoming, is no easy case for Sheriff Walt Longmire.

Wealthy landowner Pepper McKay is found dead in a trout stream on his O-Kay Ranch. Did he slip and hit his head on a rock, or was he murdered? Pepper was an indifferent parent, an alcoholic, a womanizer, and a rapist. He had three sons from his marriage—David, Ian, and Alan, who were all at the ranch for a family meeting the night before Pepper’s body was found—and another, Manx Henenoka, the product of an affair with a Shoshone cook who worked at the ranch. They all hated Pepper to varying degrees. Manx’s story is the best example of Johnson’s deep dives into characterization. Different in every way from his half brothers, he lives at the ranch, where he was raised by foreman Gary Lyman and his wife, Lynn, after his mother died, and expects nothing of Pepper. Manx wins Walt’s admiration for his blunt answers to questions and his skill training a mule named Borax. Two sets of boot prints at the scene hint at murder, delighting Walt’s undersheriff and fiancée, Victoria Moretti. Even Walt has a motive for the crime: Years ago, Pepper tried to rape his now late-wife. In addition to the murder case, there are several dangers: Wildfires threaten the ranch, and Walt is stuck acting as parole officer for Maxim Sidorov, an erudite Russian spy who once tried to kill him. Both Pepper and David were once involved with a woman named Paetra Agirra, whose hot-tempered uncle has already killed three men. Unlike the average lawman, Walt has a philosophical bent, lives by his own code, and reads voraciously. But it’s Maxim who points out the similarities between Pepper’s family and The Brothers Karamazov that could crack the case.

A complex, cerebral mystery with a plethora of suspects that demands out-of-the-box thinking and help from a heroic mule.”

Johnson has two Wyoming tour stops this summer:

Jelly Roll just got inducted into the Grand Ole Opry

Lainey Wilson welcomed Jelly Roll into the Grand Old Opry recently.

Wilson said this, “Your love for Jesus Christ radiates from you. And I’m so proud of you. It’s inspiring, it really is inspiring, Country music has always been about telling stories. Telling the truth; the good, the bad, the ugly, the messy. It’s about redemption, and tonight we are welcoming a man who has never been afraid to tell the truth about his life and that is powerful. He turned pain into purpose, mistakes into music, and somehow managed to make millions of people feel a little less alone, I’m so proud to know you, so proud to call you my friend. Jelly Roll because of your heart, your stories, your story, and the way that you have used your voice to lift everybody up it is my honor to welcome you into the Grand Ole Opry family.
