Local cake pop business, Mariahpopz, started during a time in local baker, Mariah Mancha’s life when she said she was going through more than she ever expected five years after a huge loss.
Her son, Elijah, was born stillborn on April 28, 2020.
“I was two weeks from a scheduled C-section,” Mancha said. “My husband and I waited five years after our oldest was born, (she has adrenal insufficiency, so we thought it best we waited), it took us two years to conceive him.”
When her business began on the five year anniversary of Elijah’s passing she said, “I was dealing with a lot personally and especially with my oldest daughter’s, Isabella’s, health, while also carrying the heartbreak and emotions that came with losing my son,” Mariah said. “I needed something that could give my mind a break from everything going on around me. That’s where baking came in.”
Mariah started Mariahpopz actually after Isabella my was in the hospital at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Denver and she lost the ability to walk for awhile.
“I was just lost in taking her to therapy and helping her and with his anniversary that was coming up he would have been starting kindergarten.
I was so lost in grief not only with my son’s anniversary, but my father’s, as well, it was a very tough time that I wrapped myself into this business and not in the best way. I was consumed by it to have my own escape. I wasnt eating. I wasn’t sleeping, but it turned into something so great and amazing.
“What started as a little escape quickly became something I fell in love with. I started making cake pops, experimenting with different treats, learning through my mistakes, and slowly building the confidence to turn my hobby into a business. I never started Mariahpopz knowing exactly what I was doing. I was learning as I went. But, I kept showing up. I kept practicing, and I kept pushing myself to try new things.”
Today, Mariahpopz is so much more than just a treat business.
“It’s a reminder of how far I’ve come,” Mancha said. “It has given me a creative outlet, allowed me to connect with so many amazing people, and become something my family can be a part of, too.
“I’m still learning, still growing, and still figuring things out, but I’m proud of what I’ve built from a place where I once felt completely overwhelmed.”
Mariahpopz has also started a porch pop up at her home where the cake-pops are only $3 per cake-pop.
